SURVEY: Support for Cong. Miguel Declining Due to Impeachment Complaint Against VP Duterte

A recent survey conducted from March 15-17 revealed a significant decline in support for Congressman Peter Miguel, with results showing that his decision to sign the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte has become the main reason for his supporters' fallout. According to the survey, Miguel received 39% support, trailing behind his rival, former Congressman Dinand Hernandez, who garnered 48.7%.

Public Backlash Over Impeachment Controversy

South Cotabateños have expressed strong disapproval of Miguel’s involvement in the impeachment complaint, with many seeing it as a betrayal of public trust. The issue was further fueled by widespread speculation about congressmen receiving monetary incentives for signing the complaint, which only intensified public outrage.

Critics argue that Miguel's decision to align with the impeachment move has backfired, causing a significant shift in voter sentiment just months before the elections. Many South Cotabateños believe that instead of prioritizing legislative work and addressing local concerns, Miguel engaged in national political maneuvers that did not benefit his constituents.

Adding to his decline in support is his decision to field his wife, Shine Miguel, as a candidate for Governor—a move widely perceived as a desperate attempt to maintain political control over the province. Many South Cotabateños find this decision insulting, as Shine Miguel is inexperienced, still completing her studies, and has never held an elected position—not even at the barangay level. This apparent lack of qualification has further alienated voters, deepening their distrust in Miguel’s leadership and reinforcing concerns about political dynasties overriding merit and competence.

Furthermore, reports have surfaced that Miguel has accepted election funds and political support from a well-known political clan in a neighboring province, raising concerns among South Cotabateños about external influences in the local elections.

Survey Reflects Growing Support for Former Cong. Hernandez

As a result of the controversy, former Congressman Dinand Hernandez has emerged as the frontrunner, with his survey ratings climbing to 48.7% compared to Miguel’s 39%. Hernandez’s supporters highlight his previous accomplishments and focus on local governance, which many believe is what South Cotabato needs rather than divisive political involvement at the national level.

Further strengthening Hernandez’s bid for Congress is the endorsement and full support of South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr., whose leadership remains highly trusted across the province. With Tamayo backing his candidacy, Hernandez is widely expected to reclaim his seat as the representative of the 2nd District of South Cotabato.

Additionally, the incumbent mayors of the three municipalities comprising the 2nd District—Banga, the City of Koronadal, and Tantangan—have fully endorsed the candidacies of both Hernandez and Governor Tamayo. Their collective support further consolidates Hernandez’s strong position in the race, as these local leaders wield significant influence over their respective constituencies.

Miguel’s diminishing support reflects the electorate’s growing frustration with politicians who prioritize political agendas over the welfare of their constituents.

Public Sentiment on Social Media

The fallout from Miguel’s impeachment stance has been widely discussed on social media, with many South Cotabateños voicing their disappointment. Common sentiments include:

Implications for the Upcoming Elections

With the elections fast approaching, political observers note that Miguel’s falling survey numbers could signal a major shift in South Cotabato’s political landscape. If the trend continues, Hernandez could further solidify his lead as voters seek a leader who will prioritize local governance over national political disputes.

As the campaign season intensifies, South Cotabateños remain watchful, demanding transparency and accountability from their elected officials.
